5 Signs Your Water is Breaking in the Third Trimester |
Usually, water breaks when the person is in labor. But yet the fear is real and you may still remain confused between urine and amniotic fluid. So these simpler signs may help you determine that your bag has been broken.
1. Deep Breath
The first thing to keep in mind is you do not need to panic if your water is broken. Just take a deep breath and collect all the signs of labor. Excuse yourself, check out for the nearest bathroom if you’re not at home, and check if you feel any leakage. Generally, you won’t be experiencing a massive gust but people standing near you may get their shoes wet. You just need to notice whether your underwear is wet or not.
2. Remember COAT
You need to remember a few things if you go through a water break experience. Note it somewhere and share it with your physician. Use the mnemonic code “COAT” in order to recall the information. This information can support your doctor decide the best action at the moment.
Colour: The fluid colour
Odor: DO you feel any smell
Amount: is there a trickle or a gush
Time: happening time
3. Quick changes
You should carry a dry pair of underwear, sanitary napkins, or a panty liner while going out. Never use tampons or insert anything in your vagina, this will raise the danger of infection if the water has broken.
And in case if you are not at home, rush back home if you can so that you can take a closer look if there is a fluid leakage or urine
The biggest worry during the time of pregnancy is your water may break in a non-desirable situation and may result by sending amniotic fluid gushing all over. Just imagine that if you are in the middle of a presentation at work or maybe at a store when this occurs.
4. You can rest for sometime
In order to understand whether it is amniotic fluid or urine you need to place a clean dry pas panty liner on your underwear. Lie down calmly for around half an hour. If it is amniotic fluid, it may hold in the vaginal area while you are lying on the bed.
So while lying on the bed, spare that time by gathering your thoughts. And make sure you are ready with all the needed full things in the bag for labor. Do call your partner or relative in the meantime. And one most important things try to count your fetal kick or fetal movements also.

After half an hour, check if the pad is wet or dry. If the pad is dry, it is a clear sign your water bag has not busted, it may be an increase of mucus discharge or a smaller amount of leak from the bladder.
5. Fluid Odor and Colour in Water Broke in Pregnancy
Look carefully at the fluid colour. Amniotic fluid is commonly colourless as compared to urine. Urine can be in many colours, so even though the pad is wet still there is a wider chance of the water bag being safe.
Secondly, check the fluid smell. Does it smell like urine? If yes then it has to be urine, and if it smells like a bleachy smell then it is 99% amniotic fluid. Bladder control issues are common in pregnancy.
6. Call your doctor or midwife
In case you are unable to identify whether it’s a urine leakage or an amniotic sac breakage, call your doctor or midwife immediately. They may guide you more other simpler ways to detect if it is amniotic fluid. They may ask you to visit the hospital so they may perform tests.
If they call you over to the hospital carry all the important things you may require to provide to the hospital during birth.
7. Test was done in a hospital - Contractions Before Water Breaks
The midwife or doctor may examine 2 main common tests to confirm fluid leakage. One is the simple vaginal exam and the second test will be they may use a litmus paper. The quality of this paper is it will immediately change its colour if it is exposed to amniotic fluid. And if the paper doesn’t change its colour then hopefully it, is not an amniotic fluid leakage.
The doctor may check the liquid test under a microscope. In some cases the liquid may be dry but seeing under the microscope may show the slide seems like a fern plant, and this is also known as ferning. And if this is seen then it's 99% sure the water has broken.
If all the tests are clear you will be sent home to ask to wait until the contraction begins. And if the has broken your midwife or doctor may start the treatment.
